About The Role
The Principal Data Engineer is a strategic leadership role within Patterson’s Data Services team, responsible for shaping and executing the organization’s data architecture, engineering standards, and scalable data infrastructure. As the team’s subject matter expert, you will lead the development of secure and resilient data solutions, while ensuring data quality, privacy, and compliance across platforms. This position requires a deep technical background, a passion for innovation, and a commitment to mentoring others in best practices.
Location: Fully Remote (with occasional quarterly travel to corporate sites)
Compensation: $120,200 – $150,300 (final offer may vary based on experience, location, and skills)
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design, development, and deployment of large-scale data solutions including data warehouses and integration pipelines
- Define and enforce best practices for data quality, performance, and security
- Architect and implement modern ELT pipelines and data services using Azure-based technologies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact data solutions in an agile environment
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training to team members
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation through evaluation of emerging technologies
- Represent the company at industry events and conferences
- Conduct root cause analysis and resolve systemic issues in data systems
- Champion ethical and secure handling of organizational and customer data
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a technical field
- 9+ years of data engineering experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership capacity
- Proficiency in relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB)
- Experience with cloud platforms, especially Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and other Azure services
- Strong programming skills in SQL, Python, and data science libraries
- In-depth understanding of data modeling, MDM, integration, architecture, and data warehousing
- Familiarity with data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, CCPA)
- Skilled in Git, CI/CD practices, Azure DevOps, and issue tracking tools
- Experience with BI and semantic-layer-based analytics tools
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Strong grasp of Agile and DataOps methodologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience speaking at or attending industry conferences
- Proven ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical audiences
Work Environment

On-Call Requirements
Participation in periodic on-call rotations and availability during evenings/weekends for critical issue resolution or production deployments may be required.
